Max William Slough, age 98, of Linton, passed away peacefully at 5:50 P.M. on Monday, June 7, 2021, at Glenburn Home in Linton. He was born in Coal City on September 30, 1922, the son of John Madison Slough and Ada Ethel (Dyar) Slough.
Max worked throughout the years as a self-employed farmer during World War II, for Peabody Coal Company for thirteen years, at NSWC Crane for eighteen years, and served as a lay speaker at Glenburn United Methodist Church for twenty-three years.
He was a member of Linton First United Methodist Church, Worthington F & AM Masonic Lodge #577, and served with the Gideons. He enjoyed playing his violin, mushroom hunting, and making maple syrup.
Max is survived by his wife of 76 years, Coleta Joana “Katie” Slough, a son-in-law, George (Marcia) Clements of Random Lake, WI, a son, Rick E. (Nancy) Slough of Worthington, five grandchildren, Jamie Slough, Mark Clements, Angie Schmidt, Heather Lomis, and Jamie Mobley, and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Alberta L. Clements, brothers, Frank and Von Slough, and sisters, Fern Bucklew, Carrie Haviland, Louise Smith, and Mary Soeffing.
Funeral service will be held at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 12, 2021, with Rev. Ben Biggs officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Bethel Cemetery in Owen County. The funeral will be Webcast from the bottom of the obituary on the funeral home”s website.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday from 4-8 P.M., with Masonic Service at 7 P.M., and Saturday from 10 A.M. until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Linton First United Methodist Church through the funeral home.
