Death Investigation Being Conducted After Individual In Custody Dies

From the Indiana State Police – Putnumville District:

In Vigo County on June 28, 2025, the Department of Natural Resources (Law Enforcement Division) requested the assistance of the Indiana State Police Putnamville District in reference to a death investigation of an individual in their custody. 

The subject has been identified as Shane Hedden, age 48, of West Terre Haute.  Hedden was taken into custody for resisting law enforcement.  While in custody Hedden complained of pain and was transported to a local hospital in Terre Haute.  At the hospital, Hedden had a medical episode and was later pronounced deceased by medical staff.  

Family has been notified.     

An autopsy has been scheduled for today at Terre Haute Regional Hospital. The cause of death will be determined by Vigo County Coroner, Travis Norris.

The investigation is being conducted by Indiana State Police detectives Don Curtis and Sergeant Michael Featherling, with the assistance of CSI Sergeant Tim Rader of the Putnamville State Police Post. The Vigo County Coroner Office, Department of Natural Resources, and West Terre Haute Police Department are also assisting.  The investigation is ongoing.
