Scorching Week Ahead: Heat Advisory in Effect for Much of Indiana

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis has issued a Heat Advisory that remains in effect through 8:00 PM this Friday, impacting a wide swath of central and southern Indiana. Residents are being urged to take precautions as daytime heat index values are expected to soar between 100 and 105 degrees Fahrenheit, with overnight lows offering little relief — staying stubbornly above 75 degrees each night.

This extended heatwave spans over 40 Indiana counties, including Greene, as well as nearby Sullivan, Vigo, Monroe, Knox, and Daviess. Cities like Bloomington, Columbus, and Indianapolis are also under the advisory.

What You Need to Know:

WHEN: Now through Friday, June 28 at 8:00 PM EDT WHAT: Dangerous heat index levels daily (100–105°F) NIGHTS: Minimal cooling overnight (lows 75+°F and humid) RISKS: Heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and dehydration

According to the advisory, heat-related illnesses are a serious risk — especially for older adults, young children, those without reliable access to air conditioning, and people who work outdoors.

Take It Seriously:

Stay hydrated! Water is your friend. Not soda. Not beer. Stay cool: Find air-conditioned spaces, especially in the hottest part of the day. Check on others: Make sure elderly neighbors and vulnerable individuals are safe. Be smart outside: Limit strenuous activities to early morning or late evening. OSHA suggests frequent breaks in shade or A/C if you’re working outdoors.

And let’s be blunt: heat stroke is not a joke. If someone is confused, stops sweating, or collapses, call 911 immediately.

Stay safe out there! If you’re heading out, make it brief, keep hydrated, and know your limits. If this is what June feels like, we’re really going to hate to see August.
