William ‘Joe’ Smith

William ‘Joe’ Smith, 80, of Westphalia, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, January 2, 2021 at the Gibson Family Center for Hospice Care at Terre Haute. He was born on March 17, 1940 in Terre Haute to Vernon Leonard and Elizabeth Ann (Nagy) Smith. Joe married his loving wife, Carolyn A. (Pepmeier) Smith on May 27, 1962.

Joe was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ at Westphalia, Bicknell BPO Elks #1421 as the Inner Guard and Knights of Pythias, where he enjoyed playing cards with his friends. Joe was blessed to be a farmer on his own farm and also several years at Huey Farms. He loved drinking coffee and playing Euchre at the Blue Jay Junction.

Family left to cherish the memory of Joe include: his wife, Carolyn Smith; two daughters, Lynn (Jim) Moore of Westphalia and Andrea (Frank) Spendal of Montezuma; one son, Jody Smith of Westphalia; four grandchildren, Nick Spendal, Kadye Moore, Megan Smith and Will Smith; one great-granddaughter, Maddison Moore; two brothers, Louis Smith of Denver, CO and Eddie (Pam) Withers of Brazil.

Joe was preceded in death by: his parents; one brother, Charles Smith; four sisters, Mary Bryan, Patricia Large, Deloris Welch and Margaret Churchill.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM on Friday, January 8, 2021 at Meng Family Funeral Homes, Anderson-Poindexter Chapel in Linton with Pastor Bryan Taylor officiating. An Elks Memorial Service will be held prior to the funeral service starting. Joe will be laid to rest in Salem UCC Cemetery in Westphalia.

Family and friends may call from 11:00 AM until the time of service at 1:00 PM on Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Salem United Church of Christ. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

In compliance with state regulations, social distancing and face masks are required by all attending. Additional regulations are allowing only fifty (50) individuals in the funeral home at one time.
