Joe Dearmin

Joe Mason Dearmin passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home surrounded by family on December 14, 2020. Joe was born on December 9, 1929 in Newburg, NY.

Joe grew up in Odon and loved his town. He attended Culver Military Academy where he excelled in academics, boxing, and cross-country running. After graduating from Culver in 1948, he attended Indiana University where he was affiliated with Theta Chi Fraternity. He graduated from IU with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing. Joe married Marilyn Jane Myers while attending IU.

Joe enlisted in the U.S. Navy 1952-1956. He went to OCS in Newport, RI and was later stationed in Key West, Florida. He retired from the Navy as Lt 03 and remained active in the reserves from 1956-1959.

Joe moved back to Odon in 1956 to raise his family and join the family business, Dearmin and Co. Joe was affiliated with The American Legion Post #0293. Joe later became involved with The First National Bank of Odon where he gained an ownership position. He was employed there from 1973 to 2018. He served as Chairman of the board 1994-2016. Joe was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He was also a very loyal IU fan! Joe will be missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, W. Fred Dearmin and Cleta Dee Laughlin Dearmin and his second wife, Jo Poindexter Dearmin.

Family left to cherish the memory of Joe include: his sister, Barbara Dee Hardman, Oklahoma City; his wife, Barbara J. (Haynes) Wirts Dearmin, Odon, IN; his first wife, Marilyn Jane (Myers) Dearmin, Noblesville, IN; his son, John (Dee) Dearmin, Noblesville; his daughter, Priscilla (Tim) Dearmin Turner, Carmel, IN. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Mary (Eric) Dearmin Dault, Canton, MI and their three children, J. Benjamin (Shelby) Curtis, Santa Barbara, CA and their two children, Christina Dearmin, Waco, TX and her two children, Katherine Dearmin, Lebanon, IN and her three children and Ellen (Josh) Vander Missen, Westfield, IN.

A private family graveside service will be on Monday, December 28 at Walnut Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Joe’s name to The Indiana University Student Foundation, Showalter House, 1500 N. State Road 46, Bloomington, IN 47408.

There will be a memorial service honoring Joe in the summer of 2021.
