Carlos ‘Chic’ Arney, Sr.

Carlos Laverne ‘Chic’ Arney Sr., 83, of Elnora, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at St Francis Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was born on April 13, 1937 in Elnora, Indiana to Carmen H. and Virginia H. Arney. Carlos married Judith Darlene (Miller) Arney on November 7, 1958 and they shared 62 + years together.

Carlos graduated from Elnora High School in 1956 and immediately joined the Air Force with two of his lifelong friends, Robert Courtney and Sheridan Priest. He served in England for a year and Tripoli, Africa for a year before serving in Myrtle Beach, SC for about seven years, after which he resigned from the Air Force.

Carlos was a member of the Elnora Christian Church since he was a young boy and served as an Elder for several years. He worked at the Crane Naval Base where he retired from in 1992. Carlos was a member of the Shrine Club for several years; a member of the Elnora Masonic Lodge since 1961 where he served as Master several times and was an officer for 54 years and a Secretary for 32 of those years. He was also a member of the American Legion. 

Carlos was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Michael Arney.

Family left to cherish the memory of Carlos include: his wife, Judith Darlene Arney; four daughters, Carlena Purcell, Rhonda (Charlie) Miller, Debbie Reynolds, Angela (Steve) Lacer; one son, Carlos L. (Mary) Arney Jr.; 11 grandchildren, Bradley (Sarah) Saladin, Michael (Kristen) Saladin, Travis (Trish) Reynolds, Robert (Ashley) Saladin, Tyler Reynolds, Ashlee (Greg) Peters, Andrea (Troy) Kemper, Caitlin (Garrett) Preston, Dustin Purcell, Jessie Lacer, and Danica Arney; 11 great grandchildren, Jonathan Saladin, Chloe Saladin, Abby Saladin, Brylee Saladin, Breah Saladin, Abriana Saladin, Spencer Reynolds, Emma Peters, Timothy Kemper, Nevaeh Kemper and Noah Preston; two sisters, Carmen (Ralph) Pierce and Marietta (Bob) Messer.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at Meng Family Funeral Home in Odon with Gaven Wilson officiating. The service will conclude with military rites by the Air Force Honor Guard and Odon VFW Post #9627 at the funeral home. Carlos will be laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery in Elnora in a private graveside service.

Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Friday, February 19 and from 9:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM on Saturday at the funeral home. A Masonic memorial service will be at 7:00 PM on Friday at the funeral home.

In compliance with state regulations, social distancing and face masks are required by all attending. Additional regulations are allowing only fifty (50) individuals in the funeral home at one time.
