What started as a simple idea to draw more people into the Linton VFW 7118 has turned into a beloved weekly tradition for many—and a decade-long labor of love. On Tuesday, August 5th, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., the Linton VFW will host a 10-year celebration of its popular “Taco Tuesday” event, recognizing the dedicated team of volunteers known simply as the “Taco Ladies”.
This milestone marks 10 years since the first Taco Tuesday was served on August 11th, 2015. The idea took shape shortly after Roger James took over as Quartermaster of the post. “We knew we needed something to bring the public in and make them feel welcome,” recalls one of the original Taco Ladies, Tammy James. “Food brings people together… so Taco Tuesday was born!”
The original taco crew—Tammy James, Nancy West, Gina White, and Cathy Murray—has grown steadily over the years. Today, the Taco Ladies number 11 volunteers, with bartenders included on Tuesday nights to round out the full team of 15. “We’re a family,” says James. “We love each other, encourage each other, and together we take care of our veterans.”
In addition to feeding hungry patrons, the group pools their tips each week to fund occasional “Taco Ladies trips,” bonding together outside the kitchen while celebrating their shared efforts. “It’s all volunteer work—we do it because we believe in the mission of the VFW and the value of community.”
A common misconception, according to the team, is that you must be a VFW member to attend Taco Tuesday. Not true. “Every Tuesday is open to the public,” James emphasizes. “We still have people say, ‘I want to try Taco Tuesday, but I’m not a member.’ So, we want to be clear—come eat with us. Everyone is welcome!”
That said, those interested in supporting the VFW more directly are encouraged to consider membership. “Talk to any veteran or auxiliary member to see if you’re eligible to join,” James adds.
The anniversary celebration on August 5th will feature all the usual favorites—tacos, nachos, and more—as well as sweet treats donated each week by Leslie McBride, owner of Daisy Cakes, who is also a proud auxiliary member.
In preparation for the big event, a group photo of the Taco Ladies was taken by The Lintonian on the evening of Sunday, July 13th to commemorate a decade of hard work and heart.
So, mark your calendars, Linton! Whether you’ve been a regular since Day #1 or you’ve just been taco-curious, now’s the time to join in. Ten years of tradition, service, and great tacos—it’s worth celebrating!
